Govt appoints Lt Gen Anil Chauhan (Retd) as new Chief of Defence Staff

  • The Centre announced the appointment of Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
  • The post of CDS was lying vacant since December 8, 2021, when the first CDS General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter accident in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. 
  • The post of the CDS was created on 24 December 2019.
  • He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
  • He is known China expert who retired as the Eastern Army Command chief in May last year.
  • The chiefs of the three services i.e. 'Chief of Defense Staff' retires at the age of 62 years.
