World Thalassaemia Day takes place on May 8 every year.
Every year, the special event of World Thalassemia Day is observed and organised across the world.
It is observed to raise awareness about this condition and support those suffering from it.
Thalassemia is a group of inherited conditions that affect a substance in the blood called haemoglobin.
Thalassemia is a permanent blood disorder i.e. chronic blood disorder. It is a genetic disorder, due to which a patient's red blood cells i.e. RBC do not make enough hemoglobin. This leads to anemia and patients need blood transfusions every two to three weeks to survive.
International Thalassemia Day was established by the Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) in 1994.
TIF is a non-profit organisation that was founded by Mr Panos Englezos in 1986.
The theme for World Thalassemia Day 2023 is “Be aware, Share, Care, Strengthening Education to Bridge the Thalassemia Care Gap”, which promotes knowledge and treatment options for this condition.
