  • World Thalassaemia Day takes place on May 8 every year. 
  • Every year, the special event of World Thalassemia Day is observed and organised across the world. 
  • It is observed to raise awareness about this condition and support those suffering from it. 
  • Thalassemia is a group of inherited conditions that affect a substance in the blood called haemoglobin.
  • Thalassemia is a permanent blood disorder i.e. chronic blood disorder. It is a genetic disorder, due to which a patient's red blood cells i.e. RBC do not make enough hemoglobin. This leads to anemia and patients need blood transfusions every two to three weeks to survive.
  • International Thalassemia Day was established by the Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) in 1994. 
  • TIF is a non-profit organisation that was founded by Mr Panos Englezos in 1986.
  • The theme for World Thalassemia Day 2023 is “Be aware, Share, Care, Strengthening Education to Bridge the Thalassemia Care Gap”, which promotes knowledge and treatment options for this condition.
