World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, also known as World Red Cross Day, is observed on May 8 every year.
It commemorates the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
The purpose of World Red Cross Day is to honour the humanitarian work carried out by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement globally.
World Red Cross Day serves as a reminder of the importance of humanity, compassion, and solidarity in times of crisis.
The annual Red Cross Day event was first observed in 1948, barely two years after the Tokyo Resolution, and it was given the name "World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day" in 1984.
"Everything we do comes #fromtheheart” is the theme for World Red Cross Day in 2023.
