  • May 18 is celebrated as World AIDS Vaccine Day every year. This day is also known as HIV Vaccine Knowledge Day. 
  • This day aims to raise awareness about the need for HIV/AIDS vaccine.
  • The first World AIDS Vaccine Day was observed on May 18, 1998. 
  • World AIDS Vaccine Day, also known as HIV Vaccine Knowledge Day, was observed for the first time on May 18th, 1998 in order to celebrate the anniversary of the first international AIDS Vaccine trial which took place in 1997.
  • The trial was conducted in Thailand and it involved more than 16,000 volunteers. 
  • The trial was named RV144. It was the first-ever trial against HIV that showed a combination of two vaccines reduced the risk of HIV infection by 31%.
  • Since the day of 18th May has been marked as World AIDS Vaccine Day, it is being celebrated around the world with different activities. These include conferences, rallies, community events, media campaigns, etc.
  • The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system of the body. 
  • It can be passed from one person to the other through different actions such as sharing a needle, blood, and unprotected intercourse.
  • AIDS is the next stage of HIV.
