Every year, Russia celebrates Victory Day on May 9 to commemorate the Soviet Union’s victory over Germany’s Nazi forces in World War II.
This event is held every year on May 9 in Russia. The day is celebrated on May 8 in Europe as it marks the end of World War II with the defeat and surrender of Nazi Germany on May 8, 1945 in Europe.
An elaborate ceremony also takes place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a memorial in Moscow dedicated to Soviet soldiers who died during the war.
The Soviet Union lost at least 20 million people in the war; the suffering and valour that went into the German defeat have been touchstones ever since.
The holiday commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in World War II.
It was then President Boris Yeltsin who gave the holiday a new lease of life in 1995 – on its 50th anniversary.
Victory Day was first commemorated by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in 1965.
