Two more wetlands in India — Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh — were declared as Ramsar sites by Union minister for environment, forest, and climate change Bhupender Yadav.
A total of 49 Ramsar sites have been declared in India so far.
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an inter-governmental treaty adopted on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar, on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea.
