  • The Central Government announced the rules for the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
  • The CAA was passed in December 2019 and later received the assent of the President, but there were protests against it in many parts.
  • The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2024 have been announced, which give minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan the possibility of acquiring citizenship in India.
  • The CAA 2019 amended the Citizenship Act of 1955 and facilitated Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian religious minorities coming to India from Muslim majority countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to acquire Indian citizenship due to religious persecution or fear thereof.
