Daily Current Affairs / Tamil Nadu Launches Conservation Drive for Smooth-Coated Otters
Category : State Published on: December 23 2025
Tamil Nadu has launched a dedicated conservation programme to protect the smooth-coated otter in the Cauvery delta amid rising human–wildlife conflict and shrinking freshwater habitats. Focusing on Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Cuddalore districts, the ₹20-lakh initiative will study otter populations, behaviour and habitat quality. Protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act and listed as Vulnerable by IUCN, the species is a key bio-indicator of healthy river ecosystems.
