  • According to the recent announcement, South-East Asia's first Night Sky Sanctuary will soon be operational in Ladakh.
  • This was announced by the Union Minister of Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh.
  • The Dark Sky Reserve is being established in Hanle village in eastern Ladakh as a part of the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • The Dark Sky Reserve will also house several optical, infrared and gamma-ray telescopes.
  • Its objective is to spread awareness about astronomy and promote scientific research with less artificial light and wildlife conservation.
  • A Dark Sky Reserve is an area where there is minimal or no light pollution.
  • It is being established by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.
