·         The Russian military successfully test-fired a hypersonic "Sircon" missile from a submarine for the first time.

·         The missile was launched from a depth of 131 feet from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine and hit a test target in the Barents Sea.

·         Hypersonic missiles fly much faster and are more agile than standard missiles, making missile defense systems very difficult to intercept.

·         According to President Putin, the missile can fly more than nine times the speed of sound and has a range of 620 miles.

·         The US military first tested a hypersonic missile system in 2011.
