Eminent sociologist Andre Beteille died on Tuesday night in Delhi due to age-related illness, aged 91, after prolonged treatment; his last rites were performed Wednesday. Professor Emeritus at Delhi University, he shaped Indian sociology through seminal works like "Caste, Class and Power," "Society and Politics in India," based on empirical studies of caste, class, and inequality. Awarded Padma Bhushan in 2005, his six-decade legacy on liberal democracy and social stratification endures.
