The Turkish Parliament has approved Sweden's application to join NATO in December 2023.
Sweden applied to join NATO after Russia attacked Ukraine.
After which the approval received from the Turkish Parliament has made the way forward easier.
Admitting new members to NATO requires the approval of all existing members.
In Sweden's case, there have been delays due to opposition from Turkey and Hungary.
In February 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine.
Following the invasion, Sweden and Finland departed from their decades-long stance of military non-alignment and applied to join NATO.
Finland became the 31st member of NATO in April 2023.
After getting the approval of all members, Sweden will become the 32nd member of NATO in the future.
The full name of NATO is North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
It was established in the year 1949.
