Recently Rajya Sabha has passed a bill related to the appointment and tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
This bill was introduced by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
This Bill will replace the Election Commission (Conditions of Service and Tenure of Office of Election Commissioners) Act, 1991.
It provides for the appointment, salary, and removal of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
As per the provisions of the Bill, the CEC and EC will be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.
The selection committee will include the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet minister and the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha or the leader of the largest opposition party.
According to the Bill, if the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioner give orders while on duty, the court cannot take action against them.
According to the Bill, the status of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners will be equal to that of a Supreme Court judge.
