  • Recently Rajya Sabha has passed a bill related to the appointment and tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
  • This bill was introduced by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
  • This Bill will replace the Election Commission (Conditions of Service and Tenure of Office of Election Commissioners) Act, 1991.
  • It provides for the appointment, salary, and removal of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
  • As per the provisions of the Bill, the CEC and EC will be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.
  • The selection committee will include the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet minister and the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha or the leader of the largest opposition party.
  • According to the Bill, if the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioner give orders while on duty, the court cannot take action against them.
  • According to the Bill, the status of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners will be equal to that of a Supreme Court judge.
