  • Maldives has announced the termination of the hydrographic survey agreement with India in December 2023.
  • The Government of Maldives has decided not to renew the Hydrography Agreement which expires on June 7, 2024.
  • In future, hydrography work will be carried out under 100 percent Maldivian management and information will be provided only to the people of Maldives
  • Earlier, the Maldives government had ordered Indian soldiers to leave Maldives.
  • The Hydrographic Survey Agreement was signed between then President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Indian Prime Minister in June, 2019.
  • Under this agreement, India was allowed to conduct hydrographic surveys of the territorial waters of the Maldives, study and chart the reefs, lagoons, coastline, ocean currents, and tide levels.
  • Under this agreement, India had conducted hydrographic survey twice till now.
  • Now this agreement will end in June 2024.
