  • In November, 2023, Bihar Assembly has increased the reservation available in the state to 65%.
  • This reservation has been passed unanimously by the Assembly.
  • In this new reservation, Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) will get 43% reservation.
  • Also, there will be 20% reservation for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 2% for Scheduled Tribe (ST).
  • Apart from this, provision of 10% reservation has also been made for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
  • With this, reservation in jobs and education in Bihar has now increased to 75%.
  • At present OBC and EBC get 30% reservation in Bihar.
  • There is a quota of 18% OBC and 12% EBC. That is, now the Nitish government has passed a proposal to increase their quota by 13%.
  • It has been proposed to increase the SC quota from 16% to 20%.
  • The government has proposed to increase the ST quota from 1% to 2%.
  • In the year 1992, in the Indira Sawhney case, the Supreme Court had ruled that reservation cannot exceed 50%.
