Indian chess player R Vaishali scripted history by winning the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus.
She became only the second Indian woman, after Koneru Humpy, to qualify for the Women’s World Chess Championship.
She will challenge reigning champion Ju Wenjun.
Starting at the bottom after 5 rounds, she took the lead in Round 10 and bounced back strongly after a setback in Round 12.
Tied with Bibisara Assaubayeva, Divya Deshmukh’s draw helped Vaishali clinch the title in a dramatic final round.
