  • Public enterprises selection board (PESB) on May 3, recommended Mr Polavarapu Mallikharjuna Prasad for the post of Chairman and Managing Director at Coal India Limited.
  • Prasad is currently posted as chairman cum managing director of Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) based in Ranchi.
  • The elevation of Prasad also comes at a time when the Union coal ministry has set an ambitious target for Coal India Limited to produce 1012 MT of coal by 2023-24.
  • Prasad is an alumnus of Osmania University and earned his MTech from ISM Dhanbad. 
  • Prasad started his career with Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) in 1984 as an executive trainee and eventually rose to the position of General Manager of the Lingaraj area under Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).
  • Coal India Limited is an Indian central public sector undertaking under the ownership of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. 
  • It is headquartered at Kolkata. It is the largest government-owned-coal-producer in the world.
