  • On 4th May 2023, Fatimah Asghar, a South Asian American poet and screenwriter, won the inaugural Carol Shields Prize for Fiction for her debut novel “When We Were Sisters”, published by One World/Random House.
  • In addition to the cash prize of USD 150,000, Fatimah Asghar will receive a residency at the award-winning Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
  • The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction is a new English-language literary award to celebrate creativity and excellence in fiction by women and non-binary writers in Canada and the United States of America.
  • The prize was named after American-Canadian novelist Carol Ann Shields and is managed by the Carol Shields Prize Foundation.
