Every year, the country commemorates Police Commemoration Day to honour police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
Since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2019, police officers from across the country have been on the front lines, working alongside healthcare officials.
The day commemorates the sacrifices of ten police officers who were killed by Chinese fire in 1959. Chinese troops opened fire and threw grenades at twenty Indian soldiers in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
