India observes the National Anti-Terrorism Day on May 21 every year to spreading awareness about the importance of combating terrorism and promoting unity and peace in the country.
The day serves as a reminder of the tragic consequences of terrorism and the need for constant vigilance against such terrorist acts.
The National Anti-Terrorism Day aims to honor the memory of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on May 21, 1991, by a terrorist group named Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
In 1992, the Government of India decided to observe May 21 as National Anti-Terrorism Day to honor the memory of Rajiv Gandhi.
He was the youngest prime minister of India who came into power at 40.
According to the 10th edition of the Global Terrorism Index, India ranked among the 25-worst terror-hit countries but also among 56 of the 120 nations surveyed with no respondents selecting war and terror as the biggest threat to their daily safety.
