  • Eminent educationist Manoj Soni took oath as the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • Soni, who joined the Commission as member on June 28, 2017, has been performing the duties of the UPSC chairman since April 5, 2022.
  • According to UPSC, Manoj Soni joined the Commission as Member on 28 June 2017 and was later “appointed to perform the duties of the post of chairman, UPSC under Article 316 (A) of the Constitution of India.
  • Prior to joining UPSC, Soni has served as Vice-Chancellor for three terms, including two consecutive terms as VC of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU), Gujarat, between August 2009 and July 2015 and another term as VC of The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (The MSU of Baroda) between April 2005 to April 2008.
  • The UPSC conducts civil services examination to select officers of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.
  • The Commission is headed by a chairman and it can have a maximum of 10 members. There is still a vacancy of five members in the UPSC.
