The Lok Sabha passed the National Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024 on March 27, 2025, which aims to improve the country’s disaster management system.
The Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill 2024 empowers the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA) to formulate disaster management plans directly at the national and state levels, enhancing efficiency and coordination.
This bill allows state governments to establish urban disaster management authorities in capital cities and cities with municipal corporations. Additionally, it provisions the creation of disaster databases at the national and state levels, ensuring better planning and response.
