  • Lionel Messi, the captain of the World Cup-winning Argentina team, has been named the 2023 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
  • After helping Argentina win the FIFA World Cup last year, Messi was given the trophy. Messi has the honour of being awarded the Laureus Sportsman of the Year for the second time.
  • Lionel Messi and his World Cup-winning Argentina scored a double by being named Sportsman and Team of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards. 
  • He is the first athlete to win the team and individual awards in the same year.
  • Manchester United and Denmark footballer Christian Eriksen won a special comeback award after returning to the game following a cardiac arrest.
  • Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won the 100m gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, won the Laureus sportswoman of the year award.
  • The Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year is an annual award honouring the achievements of individual men from the world of sports. It was first awarded in 2000 as one of the seven constituent awards presented during the Laureus World Sports Awards.
