  • Fathi Bashagha, the prime minister of the Libyan parliament-backed Government of National Stability in Sirte, was suspended from his post on Tuesday, May 16. 
  • The decision was announced after a meeting of the parliament in Benghazi by its spokesperson Abdullah Belhaiq.
  • Bashagha was appointed as prime minister by the Libyan parliament based in the eastern part of the country in February last year.
  • Libya, officially the State of Libya, is a country in the Maghreb region in North Africa. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad to the south, Niger to the southwest, Algeria to the west, and Tunisia to the northwest.
  • Libya, once a prosperous and stable country in Africa, plunged into war and chaos following the NATO-led invasion in 2011 and the killing of long-term ruler Muammar Gaddafi.
