Over his illustrious career, he authored nearly 100 novels and short stories that vividly explored moral dilemmas, ambition, and the struggles of urban India.
  • Several of his novels, including Simabadhya and Jana Aranya, were adapted into films by Satyajit Ray, while Chowringhee and Maan Samman inspired landmark Bengali and Hindi films, bridging literature and cinema. Shankar’s works reflected his own early-life struggles, clerical work, and insights into city life.
