  • Computer science pioneer David J. Farber, often called a grandfather of the internet, passed away on 7 February in Tokyo at age 91. He began his career at Bell Laboratories, where he promoted linking computers with telecommunications long before networked systems were common. As a professor and mentor, he guided figures such as Jonathan Postel and Paul Mockapetris, who later shaped core internet architecture.
  • David J. Farber also worked with policymakers to support experimental computer networks. His 1977 paper with Paul Baran predicted computers as tools for communication, foreshadowing email and digital messaging. Since 2018, he has been teaching at Keio University, continuing his influence on global networking education.
