  • The International Day of Human Space Flight is celebrated each year on April 12. 
  • The United Nations General Assembly in its resolution on April 7, 2011, Okayed April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight. 
  • The International Day of Human Space Flight is celebrated on April 12 as this was the day in 1961 that the Russian cosmonaut became the first human to journey into outer space. 
  • On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut, made history by completing the first successful human space flight.
  • He circled the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft for 108 minutes, traveling at a speed of 27,400 kilometers per hour.
  • The first image of a Blackhole also became possible due to the advancements in outer space technologies. 
  • In Russia, 12 April has been marked as Cosmonautics Day since 1963, while in the United States, it is observed as Yuri's Night, a day to honor the cosmonaut and his historic accomplishment. 
  • In recognition of this historic event, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight in 2011, commemorating the anniversary of Gagarin’s flight and celebrating the contributions of space exploration to human knowledge and progress.
