  • It is known that even after India's independence, Goa was still under the rule of Portugal.
  • On December 19, 1961, Goa became independent from the Portuguese and became an integral part of India.
  • After this campaign, the Indian Army liberated the state from 450 years of Portuguese rule.
  • Elections were held in Goa after independence from the Portuguese.
  • On December 20, 1962, Dayanand Bhandarkar was elected the first elected Chief Minister of Goa.
  • Along with Goa, the liberation day of Daman and Diu is also celebrated on 19th December.
  • The Portuguese were the first foreign power to enter India and were also the last foreign power to leave India.
