In India, 'Ganga River Dolphin Day' is celebrated every year on 5 October to encourage conservation and raise awareness of the Ganges River dolphin.

  • On this day in 2010, the Ganges dolphin was declared a national aquatic animal.
  • Then, in 2012 the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Government of Uttar Pradesh jointly launched a dolphin conservation campaign in the country.
  • The Ganges River Dolphin was officially discovered in 1801.
  • The Ganges river dolphin is found in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.
