· Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai inaugurated ‘Vijayanagar’ as the 31st district of the state.
· The notification for the formation of the Vijayanagar district was issued on 8 February, despite protests by the opposition in Karnataka, and the opposition-held a rally against the decision.
· This 31st district of Karnataka is carved out of Ballari district.
· The name Vijayanagara is inspired by the Vijayanagara Empire of King Krishna Devaraya, whose ruins have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
