The Kerala government has officially redesignated the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary, making it the first sanctuary of its kind in the State.
This change was notified through SRO No. 1407/2025 under Section 18(1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, amending the original 1984 notification that declared the area a wildlife sanctuary. The renaming follows recommendations from the State Board for Wildlife, citing the region’s rich diversity and high population of butterflies.
