  • The Kerala government has officially redesignated the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary, making it the first sanctuary of its kind in the State.
  • This change was notified through SRO No. 1407/2025 under Section 18(1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, amending the original 1984 notification that declared the area a wildlife sanctuary. The renaming follows recommendations from the State Board for Wildlife, citing the region’s rich diversity and high population of butterflies.
