Indian filmmaker Anuparna Roy won the Best Director award in the Orizzonti section at the 82nd Venice Film Festival for her debut feature Songs of Forgotten Trees. She is the first Indian director to earn this honor. Starring Naaz Shaikh and Sumi Baghel, the film explores the intertwined lives of two women in Mumbai. Roy dedicated the award to women worldwide, calling it a tribute to silenced voices, marking a landmark moment for Indian cinema globally.
