  • The earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has badly damaged Gaziantep Castle, a historic site and tourist attraction in southeastern Turkey.
  • The castle collapsed during the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck in the early hours of February 6.
  • Gaziantep Castle was fortified during the Roman Empire and expanded under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century.
  • The castle is unique for its irregular shape and 12 towers (it was surrounded by a moat at one point, too).
  • It most recently served as the site of a new museum, Gaziantep Defense Heroism Panorama and Museum, which teaches about the castle’s role in the defense of the city in a war against French forces in the early 20th century.
