The prize is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, India's first feature film Raja Harischandra, which he directed in 1913. A Swarna Kamal, a cash prize of Rs.1,000,000, and a shawl are included in the prize. Devika Rani received the prize for the first time in 1969, making her the first woman to receive it.
