The UPSC offers the CDS OTA exam as one of its exams. The CDS abbreviation stands for Central Defence Service, and the OTA abbreviation stands for Officers Training Academy.
OTA in CDS applies to both males and females. The job that gets through OTA is known as Short Service Commission as they are allowed to be in service only for 10-14 years.
 
If the candidate wishes to serve for more than 14 years, they must apply for a permanent commission. If the candidate is worthy of serving for a longer period, the request for PC will be granted. The CDS and CDS OTA examination patterns are also distinct. The CDS exam consists of three parts, whereas the CDS OTA exam consists of only two parts.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Educational Criteria for UPSC CDS - Combined Defence Service:

    (A) For IMA - Indian Military Academy

    • Bachelor's Degree of a recognized  University or equivalent.

    (B) For INA - Indian Naval Academy

    • Degree in Engineering from a recognized University/Institution

    (C) For Air Force Academy 

    • Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

    (D) For Officers’ Training Academy (Male/Female)

    • Bachelor Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.

    Unmarried women, Childless widows who have not remarried, and childless divorcees (with divorce papers) who have not remarried are all eligible.

    Important Note:

    • A candidate must be unmarried and must either be a Citizen of India, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, or belonging to Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma, and East African Countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zaire, Malawi, Zambia, and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of relocating to India permanently.

    • Only unmarried male/female candidates born between the 2nd of July, 1997 and the 1st of July, 2003 are eligible for the Officers' Training Academy.

    • Candidates who have been prohibited from holding any form of commission in the Defence Services by the Ministry of Defence will be ineligible to take the exam.

    • UPSC has set the different physical, visual, and medical standards for males and females for different posts of CDS, so candidates can check the information of physical standards through the official link on our website or whether they can check directly from the official link of UPSC.

    Interview for Intelligence and Personality Test for UPSC CDS - IMA, INA, AFA, and OTA

    Interview Pattern for IMA, INA, and AFA

    The total mark is given in this test is 300.

    The interview is divided into two stages:

    • Officers Intelligence Rating (OIR).

    • The second stage consists of an interview, Group Testings Officers Task (GTO), psychological tests, and the conference.

    *The Officers Intelligence Rating is Picture Perception and Description Tests (PP & DT). To proceed to the second stage of the SSB interview, a candidate must pass these tests.*

    The total mark is given in this test is 200.

    The interview is divided into two stages:

    Fee Payable by Candidates for UPSC CDS - Combined Defence Service Exam:

    For Other Candidates: Rs. 200/-

    For Female/SC/ST candidates: Exempted

     

    Mode of Payment: 

    • The payment can be made by using either depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using the net banking facility of State Bank of India, or by using Visa/Master/Rupay Credit/Debit Card.

    • The payment of the examination fee can be made only through the modes prescribed above.

    • Any other method of payment is neither valid nor acceptable.

    • The UPSC has no mechanism for refunding any fees paid by candidates, therefore in the event that an application is successfully withdrawn, the fees would not be reimbursed.
