  • The country's first six-lane steel slag-based road has been constructed in Surat, Gujarat in December 2023.
  • This road has been constructed for the road connecting NH-6 to Hazira Port.
  • Steel slag is produced as solid waste obtained from iron ore during steel production.
  • Integrated steel plants generate approximately 180 – 200 kg of steel slag for every tonne of steel produced.
  • This is equivalent to producing approximately 15 million tonnes of steel slag annually.
  • This road has been constructed by the Central Road Research Organization in collaboration with the Ministry of Steel.
  • The construction of slag road will help both the Waste to Wealth and Swachh Bharat Mission campaigns run by the government.
