Tamil Nadu Leads India in Deceased Organ Donation with 57 Donors in Early 2026

  • Tamil Nadu recorded 57 deceased organ donors in the first two months of 2026, nearly one donation daily, reaffirming its position as India's top state in deceased organ donation under the oversight of Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan).
  • The state began formalising its donation system as early as 2008, building a model integrating policymakers, healthcare administrators, law enforcement and civil society, ensuring scientific organ allocation and ethical family counselling across government and private hospitals.
  • Targeted initiatives have transformed public perception, including over 650 honour walks conducted since 2023 and Government Order 331, which mandates state honours for deceased donors, significantly boosting community trust and participation.
  • Sustained growth is attributed to coordinated governance, public awareness and technological integration, with the programme recovering strongly after a Covid-19 slowdown and government hospitals now matching private institutions in organ retrieval efforts.
