SKUAST Srinagar Achieves Breakthrough in Gucchi Mushroom Cultivation

  • Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Srinagar has successfully cultivated Morchella mushroom (Gucchi) under controlled conditions for the first time.
  • Gucchi, an expensive edible mushroom belonging to the Ascomycota group, was earlier harvested only from the wild in high-altitude coniferous forests.
  • It grows best at 15-20°C day and 5-9°C night temperature.
  • This achievement will reduce dependence on wild collection, boost farmer income, ensure sustainable supply and help conserve forest ecosystems.
