Tamil Nadu Inaugurates First Dark Sky Park at Kolli Hills for Astro-Tourism

  • Tamil Nadu launched its first Dark Sky Park at Ariyur Shola Reserve Forest in Kolli Hills, Namakkal district, inaugurated by Forest Minister R. S. Rajakannappan to promote astro-tourism and night-sky observation.
  • Kolli Hills was selected for its elevated terrain and minimal light pollution, with a 1.5 km radius free from artificial light. Established at ₹1 crore, the park features three advanced telescopes and solar-powered infrastructure.
  • The park operates January 15 to June 15, hosting stargazing sessions and overnight camps two to three times monthly during new moon phases, in partnership with Trek Tamil Nadu and Starvoirs.
  • Safety and sustainability remain priorities, with CCTV monitoring, a watchtower with forest staff, and Eco-Development Committee members managing visitor facilitation alongside eco-hut accommodation facilities.
