Russia Deploys Bulava Intercontinental Ballistic Missile on Submarines

  • Russia has officially deployed its submarine-launched Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile, marking a significant step in the modernization of its nuclear arsenal. 
  • The adoption of the Bulava was formalized in a decree dated May 7, coinciding with President Vladimir Putin's commencement of a new six-year term.
  • Amidst ongoing tensions with the West, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine, President Putin has reiterated that Russia's nuclear forces are technically prepared. 
  • He has cautioned that direct NATO intervention could lead to nuclear conflict, underscoring the strategic importance of the Bulava missile in maintaining Russia's deterrence capabilities.
  • The Bulava missile, developed since the 1990s, is designed for deployment on Borei-class submarines. 
  • The missile demonstrated its capabilities in a successful test-launch in November, where it was fired from an underwater position in the White Sea and accurately struck a target thousands of kilometers away on the Kamchatka peninsula.
