  • Garba is a famous folk dance of Gujarat.
  • Recently, UNESCO has included this folk dance in its cultural heritage list.
  • This recognition was given under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • Garba has been described by UNESCO as a 'ritualistic and devotional dance' dedicated to the worship of 'Shakti'.
  • Garba is the 15th cultural heritage of India to receive cultural heritage status from UNESCO.
  • Traditionally, Garba is an earthen pot with a lamp inside, which is called 'Garbi' in Gujarat.
  • The Garba dance is performed around these earthen pots, called 'Garbha Deep'.
  • This game means that men and women are fighting like goddess Durga and demon-king Mahishasura.
  • Garba costume consists of 3 parts.
  • Women wear choli or blouse, chaniya or long skirt and bright dupatta and men wear turban with kadu.
  • There is a way of doing this, in which women and men dance in groups of two or four to keep in tune with the rhythm.
  • Kutiyattam, Sanskrit theater from Kerala, was first included in this list in the year 2008.
