Recently Anand Marriage Act has come into force in Jammu and Kashmir.

  • The Anand Vivah Act relates to marriages within the Sikh community.
  • This Act was passed by the Parliament in the year 2012.
  • At that time it was applicable in all the states/union territories except Jammu and Kashmir.
  • This Act has also come into force in Jammu and Kashmir in December 2023.
  • In the Sikh community it is called 'Anand Karaj'.
  • It means ‘working towards happiness’ or ‘working towards a happy life’.
  • It was started by Sikh Guru Amar Das.
  • The purpose of this Act is to legally validate marriages performed in accordance with Sikh traditions.
  • Due to Article 370, it was not applicable in Jammu and Kashmir but now after 11 years it has been implemented in Jammu and Kashmir also.
