Rajnath Singh Unveils Kalpana Chawla Research Centre in Chandigarh University

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated the Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science & Technology (KCCRSST) at Chandigarh University.
  • The goal of the research centre is to train students in space science, satellite creation, and space research.
  • He also announced a Rs 10 crore scholarship scheme for the children of defence personnel from the three services.
  • The cutting-edge facility will serve as the Ground Control Station for Chandigarh University's Student Satellite Initiative (CUSat).
  • CUSat is a nano-satellite designed in-house by Chandigarh University students as well as a research Geo-Spatial Centre.
  • It is North India's first university to design and develop its own satellite.
  • The launch of CUSat will make Punjab the first border state in India to have its own satellite in space.
  • Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin to fly to space. She was an Indian-American astronaut who first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator.
  • Kalpana Chawla along with six other crew members died on February 1, 2003, when the Columbia space shuttle disintegrated over Texas, shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission.
