President Murmu conferred with Suriname's highest civilian award

  • President Droupadi Murmu has been conferred with Suriname's highest civilian award ‘the Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star’ by President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to honour the deep-rooted bilateral ties.
  • President Murmu dedicated the award to the future generations of the Indian-Surinamese community.
  • During her state visit to Serbia and Suriname, President Murmu arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on June 4. Several significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between India and Suriname in the areas of health, agriculture, and capacity building.
  • The Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star (Dutch: Grootlint in de Orde van de Gele Ster) is the highest civilian award in Suriname. 
  • It was established on 25 November 1975, the day Suriname became independent from the Netherlands. 
  • The award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Suriname, either in Suriname or abroad.
