  • National Pollution Control Day is celebrated every year on 2 December in the country.
  • National Pollution Control Day is observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the Bhopal gas tragedy on 2 December 1984.
  • The purpose of this day is to bring awareness about the deaths caused by polluted water, land and air.
  • On the night of December 2, 1984, there was a leak of 'Methyl Isocyanite' gas from the plant of the American company Union Carbide India Limited.
  • This leak had converted the city of Bhopal into a huge gas chamber.
  • More than 15,000 people died and millions were affected by the horrific tragedy due to the leakage of at least 30 tons of methyl isocyanite gas.
  • The theme of National Pollution Control Day 2023 has been 'Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet'.
