National Pollution Control Day is celebrated every year on 2 December in the country.
National Pollution Control Day is observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the Bhopal gas tragedy on 2 December 1984.
The purpose of this day is to bring awareness about the deaths caused by polluted water, land and air.
On the night of December 2, 1984, there was a leak of 'Methyl Isocyanite' gas from the plant of the American company Union Carbide India Limited.
This leak had converted the city of Bhopal into a huge gas chamber.
More than 15,000 people died and millions were affected by the horrific tragedy due to the leakage of at least 30 tons of methyl isocyanite gas.
The theme of National Pollution Control Day 2023 has been 'Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet'.
