Maharashtra signs MoU with Russia’s ROSATOM to develop thorium-based Small Modular Reactor

  • The Maharashtra government and Russia's ROSATOM company have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of thorium fuel-based small modular reactors (SMR), which will promote a new energy technology under the 'Make in Maharashtra' initiative. 
  • The main objective of the memorandum of understanding is to jointly develop a thorium reactor in Maharashtra, to commercialize thorium reactors according to the safety standards of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), and to establish an assembly line for thorium reactors under the 'Make in Maharashtra' initiative.
