Published on: June 26 2024 Share on facebook

  • The IUCN has upgraded the conservation status of the Iberian lynx from "Endangered" to "Vulnerable," marking a remarkable recovery from near extinction due to sustained conservation efforts.
  • From just 62 mature individuals in 2001, the Iberian lynx population has grown significantly to 648 individuals by 2022, with current estimates exceeding 2,000 individuals.
  • This growth is attributed to measures such as habitat restoration, prey abundance management, and genetic diversity enhancement through breeding programs.
  • Despite improvements, the Iberian lynx faces ongoing threats including potential fluctuations in the European rabbit population due to virus outbreaks, diseases from domestic cats, poaching, road kills, and habitat alterations linked to climate change.
