• Colin Powell, the first Black US secretary of state whose leadership in several Republican administrations helped shape American foreign policy in the last years of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st, has died from complications from Covid-19.
• Powell was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a malignancy of plasma cells that weakens the immune system, as well as Parkinson's disease.
• Powell became the first African-American secretary of state in 2001 under Republican President George W Bush.
• He also sparked controversy for helping garner support for the Iraq War.
