  • The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved the world's first vaccine for honey bees.
  • The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a conditional licence for a vaccine developed by US biotech company, Dalan Animal Health, to defend honeybees from American foulbrood disease.
  • Developed in Finland, the vaccine works against a bacterial condition known as American foulbrood disease that attacks bee larvae.
  • The vaccine was developed by researchers Dalial Freitak and Heli Salmela working at Helsinki University's Viikki campus.
  • American foulbrood originated in the US, and has since spread around the world.
