The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved the world's first vaccine for honey bees.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a conditional licence for a vaccine developed by US biotech company, Dalan Animal Health, to defend honeybees from American foulbrood disease.
Developed in Finland, the vaccine works against a bacterial condition known as American foulbrood disease that attacks bee larvae.
The vaccine was developed by researchers Dalial Freitak and Heli Salmela working at Helsinki University's Viikki campus.
American foulbrood originated in the US, and has since spread around the world.
